Types of sedation
If you need dental work or surgery to enjoy your best health and appearance, there are several types of sedation that make the entire experience feel as though it takes no time at all and go by without pain or anxiety. General anesthesia is what most patients typically think of when they imagine a surgery room. This anesthesia keeps the patient asleep during the entire procedure and takes hours or days to wear off fully.
At Northern Texas Facial & Oral Surgery, we offer easy options that allow you to stay conscious and require less recovery time, so you’ll be back on your feet without the groggy side effects. For example, Nitrous Oxide, sometimes called laughing gas, is a natural mix of oxygen and nitrous oxide gases that you can inhale in a low concentration to help you feel calm throughout a dental procedure while still fully awake and aware.
IV Sedation is another numbing option used when you’re fully conscious, but it takes a bit longer to wear off after your appointment, so you’ll need a friend or family member to drive you home while you relax for about 24 hours.
Local anesthesia, however, is a great choice for minor procedures if you’re feeling nervous about discomfort. You’ll stay awake and completely alert, while only the affected area of your mouth will feel numb to the touch. Compared to other pain relief options, local anesthesia won’t make you feel sleepy or groggy at any point, so you can even return to work, school, or driving your car when the procedure in our office is complete.
What to expect in our office
If local anesthetic is required for your procedure, the surgical area will first be numbed with an anesthetizing medication. Our surgeons are well known for gently and effectively administering local anesthetic. Your comfort is our top priority!
Once the medication takes effect, the area where the local anesthetic was injected will be numb, blocking feelings of discomfort. You may still experience feelings of pressure, such as is sometimes felt during a tooth extraction. However, the sensations of pain are completely blocked. After your procedure is complete, the numbness created by local anesthetic wears off gradually and you can return to your normal routine in a timely manner.
Experienced oral and maxillofacial surgeons
Oral and maxillofacial surgeons (OMSs) are trained in all aspects of anesthesia administration. Following dental school, an OMS completes at least four years of training in a hospital-based surgical residency program alongside medical residents in general surgery, anesthesia, and other specialties.
