If you notice a change in the color or texture of the tissue inside your mouth, we encourage you to schedule an appointment with us. Additionally, your general dentist may refer you to our office to investigate an unidentified growth or lesion found during a dental exam. While the change may be the result of something benign and harmless, proactively caring for your oral and overall wellbeing is a smart thing to do.

Because of their training and expertise, oral surgeons are uniquely qualified to assess abnormal oral conditions and provide specialized care to remedy a variety of conditions that cause changes within the mucosa, or lining, of the mouth, as well on the lips, tongue, face, or neck. A biopsy may be performed to identify the source of the issue.

We encourage you to check your mouth for irregularities on a regular basis. Don’t hesitate to call us if you notice anything out of the ordinary. Be on the lookout for changes such as the following:

  • Reddish or whitish patches in the mouth
  • A sore that doesn’t heal within two weeks or that bleeds easily
  • Any lump or thickening inside the mouth
  • Chronic hoarseness or a sore throat that won’t go away
  • Difficulty or pain when chewing or swallowing

Many oral conditions aren’t painful, so it’s easy to put off having them assessed. Please keep in mind, though, that conditions such as oral cancer can begin with a painless lesion in or around the mouth. Early detection of oral cancer greatly improves survival rates and allows for rapid administration of treatment.
